The Road to Quality Men's Yoga Pants

Vintage photo of our Pennsylvania dye house still open for business today.

Development of the Cobra line was a many-year journey for Bhujang Style founder Andy Salamone. A yogi and martial artist, Andy found himself on a perpetual search to find pants with enough stretch for yoga but that would also be wearable in public. He discovered that men’s pants with almost any amount of stretch tended to look terrible, and that good-looking pants with enough stretch for serious yoga simply didn’t exist. In talking with other male yogis, he found that they, too, were largely dissatisfied with the comfort and performance of the pants and shorts they wore during their yoga practices. He was surprised to discover that many yogis wore women’s yoga pants at home because of the comfort and feel they provided, but these men would never wear them out of the house due to their revealing nature.

Thus began the quest to produce the perfect yoga pants and shorts for men. One of the biggest challenges was creating a fit that would be snug enough to provide proprioceptive feedback to the yogi without being too revealing in all the wrong places. Working with a team of designers and pattern makers, the revolutionary cut form of the pants took form. They would be close-fitting to provide that secure and comfortable feel, stretch to move with the body, stand up to repeated home laundering, and have the style points to be worn with confidence outside the yoga studio.

While perfecting the design and fit of the pants, Andy began to look for fabric that met his criteria. Much interaction with Asian mills yielded nothing but near misses, with fabrics that were close, but ultimately not perfect. The search led Andy back to the U.S. where he met a group of fabric gurus who worked to to develop a proprietary blend, CobraLuxe™, featuring MicroModal®, a fiber made from beech trees, a highly sustainable source yielding a very eco-friendly fabric. The yarn is spun in the USA, the fabric is knitted in the USA, and the clothing is cut and sewn in the USA.
